Nearly 200 friends, patients, and community members joined Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and Dartmouth Medical School leadership and faculty on the evening of September 28, 2006 for the Annual Benefactors Appreciation Reception.

A tradition for over two decades, the Reception gives our supporters an opportunity to come together with DHMC and DMS leaders and learn how their generosity improves the lives of those in our community and beyond.

Among the evening's highlights was a moving keynote address by Dr. Ira Byock, director of the Palliative Medicine Program at DHMC. Dr. Byock's remarks, entitled "Precious Possessions," drew upon the inspiring stories from patients and families whose lives have touched his over the years.

Other highlights included announcements of Campaign achievement to date and plans for a visionary new translational and clinical research facility. The new facility, which will be constructed on the south side of DHMC's Lebanon campus, will bring state of the art research and exceptional academic programs together in close proximity to clinical and patient care areas to foster collaboration and discovery. The facility will be named in honor of former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, MD, a Dartmouth College graduate who dedicated a lifetime of service to the nation, virtually defining the art and science of healthcare advocacy on behalf of patients.

Nancy Formella, acting president of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic, recognized J. Brian Quinn as this year's recipient of the Outstanding Community Ambassador Award in recognition of his service to DHMC as chair of the 500-plus member Dartmouth-Hitchcock Assembly of Overseers, a member of the NCCC Working Group for the Transforming Medicine Campaign, and a generous longtime donor. Prof. Quinn, who was unable to attend, will receive the award later this month at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Assembly of Overseers meeting.

Over 21,000 donors throughout northern New England and the nation made gifts totaling more than $27 million for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2006, making it a record-breaking fundraising year for DMS and DHMC. "We are here tonight to say thank you, Brian Lally, vice president for Development and Alumni Relations, noted. "And we believe the best way to thank you is...to spend your gift wisely."
